The irony: we are known as an agricultural county yet little of the food grown here meets the nutritional needs of the community. Our local food pantries have to import food from California and Arizona. With only two grocery stores, prices are high, so much so that many products are out of the reach of many of our neighbors.  To make matters worse the farms take up at least 75% of our annual water consumption and give us nothing in Gross Receipts Taxes to support maintenance of basic infrastructure, yet take farm aid to stay afloat. $9 million went to 225 ag businesses last year in Luna County.   

County Commissioners Chandler and Harvey have ignored the water crisis and even gone so far as to say the farmers can carry on because one day someone will figure out how to get water out of a stone. 

ACTIONS:  We have started a Luna County Water Advisory Council to find sustainable solutions that will last into the next generation.  We will sponsor new actions that lower the cost of food for our neighbors, including grants for home planter boxes/hydroponics and irrigation systems, classes, food share coops, etc.
